I hope you all enjoyed the artwork of Piccolo and Master Roshi. Before I get to my thoughts on DragonBall Super, I was wondering which DB/DBZ/DBS characters you would like to see artwork of? Please leave your suggestions in the comments below and I'll get drawing!
Onto my first impressions of DragonBall Super. Spoiler Warning up to Episode 84.
Firstly, I care for this sequel to DBZ far more than I cared for DBGT. After DragonBall Evolution, my interest in the series had certainly begun to wane and I stopped drawing. I missed out on the premieres of Battle of the Gods and Ressurection F and never expected another show to air. Going into DragonBall Super, I was happy to see the first two arcs of the series covered the events in Battle of the Gods and Ressurection F. I was a little upset that Vegeta didn't get to finish off Frieza but other than that, I loved watching what basically became an extended edition of the two films. I'd give these first two arcs an 8/10.
Then we get into the 'Universe 6 v. Universe 7' story arc and I got my first taste of original content in awhile. I was unhappy Majin Buu was immediately disqualified but I was excited to see some new opponents for the Z Fighters! Finally! I felt like having Goku fight first really threw off my expectations. When Goku lost to Frost, I thought maybe they were going to have to actually win without Goku. If you've seen the show then you know Goku's ring-out judgement gets reversed. I think there should have been more backstory for Frost, Hit, and the rest. We don't really get to know any of them. The fights were pretty intense, they did a really good job animating them. The animation quality does vary from episode to episode, but overall, the art is pretty good. Piccolo's fight was good, but I feel he's still under utilized as a strategist and Super Namekian. After Vegeta loses to Hit, it's all down to Goku again. The final fight is pretty good, with Hit and Goku consistently trying to surpass one another. I would've liked to know more about universe 6 though. After they win and they use the Super Dragon Balls, I thought they could've worked more on the design of that dragon. He didn't really match up to Shenron and Porunga. I'd probably give this arc a score of 7/10.
Definitely the next arc has been my favorite so far. Future Trunks and Future Mai are fighting a mysterious opponent named Black that looks identical to Son Goku. Black kills future Bulma and almost kills Mai. It's incredibly intense! Trunks returns to the present to enlist the help of Vegeta, Goku, and Bulma. What follows is this amazing story that involves the gods of other universes and introduces us to the incredibly arrogant and self-righteous Zamasu! The Z fighters continously fail in their attempts to defeat Black and Zamasu and I was on the edge of my seat! I was really excited to see the return of Master Roshi's Mafuba technique! The end of the battle is very bitter-sweet, as Fusion Zamasu is slain by Future Trunks, but the corrupted soul of Zamasu begins to kill every mortal in the universe. Trunks literally loses everyone but Mai. I was floored! Goku has to asked Zen-oh Sama for assistance, it felt like one of the few times the Z fighters lost even though they killed Zamasu. My only gripe was that I wished Black had turned out to be some corrupted form of Goten instead of Zamasu in Goku's body. I think Goku fighting his evil son would've made for some intense moments. This arc is definitely a 10/10 for me!
We're going into the Universe Survival arc next! I have to say that I'm really excited to see more characters returning! Particularly Gohan returning to the fight, Androids 17 and 18, Tenshinhan, Majin Buu, etc. I can't wait to see them all fighting and I can't wait to see what challenges lie ahead for them!
Really excited for the future of Dragon Ball! Can't wait to start drawing some Dragon Ball Super, but where to start!?
Talk to you all again soon! Please leave your thoughts on Dragon Ball Super, I'd love to read them!
Bye!
